Leading Women’s and Reproductive Rights Organizations Urge Canadian PM and G8 Leaders to Address Family Planning and Abortion Care at Summit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, Canada, June 22, 2010—Five Canadian advocacy groups have for months been calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to address family planning and abortion care in the G8 maternal and child health initiative. They now have the support of:

• more than 100 International organizations from the G8 and other countries,
• five former directors of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),
• a former Prime Minister of Japan,
• parliamentarians in 18 different countries, and

Sharon McIvor Testifies before the House Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development

Sharon McIvor, accompanied by Gwen Brodsky, testified before the House Committee on Aboriginal Affairs today. For nearly three decades, McIvor has led the battle to see equal treatment for Aboriginal women with respect to Indian status registration. During her testimony McIvor recognized those who engaged in the struggle for equal rights to Indian status under the Indian Act before her court case commenced in 1989, including Mary Two-Axe Early, Jeannette Lavell, and Sandra Lovelace.

The Antigone Foundation has launched "Antigone Connect." Antigone Connect is an online site working to engage women’s organizations and feminists across the country to work collaboratively for women’s rights and equality in Canada and around the world. We are hoping to create a powerful online network that will be able to help lead the Canadian women’s movement forward in the coming years.

Over the course of two days, participants discussed the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), how CEDAW applies to their communities and how women in the North can take their voices to the United Nations.

FAFIA’s second northern CEDAW Train-the-trainer meeting took place in Yellowknife, NWT on February 12th and 13th, 2010. Twenty –two women participated in the training.

Over the two days, participants discussed the CEDAW Convention, the review process and how to relate this international instrument to their communities. As well, the group looked at how CEDAW was being implemented in the territory and how organizations and individuals could take an active role in monitoring CEDAW implementation and participate in future CEDAW reviews.

Canada Ignores Women’s Human Rights

February 2, 2010 (Ottawa) Canada is ignoring the basic human rights of the poorest and most vulnerable Canadian women, says the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) in a new report issued today. No Action: No Progress assesses Canada’s response to priority recommendations that were made by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women after its review of Canada in 2008. At that time, the Committee identified two areas in which human rights violations were so pressing that they required immediate action:

Women's Worlds 2011 Call for Participation in Regional Networks

You may know that Women's Worlds 2011 (WW 2011) is a congress taking place in Ottawa-Gatineau in July 2011 -- the largest gathering of women from around the world in Canadian history.

This announcement kicks off the selection process for regional network meetings happening in February and March across Canada as part of the 'Women Build Up To the Congress' project affiliated with WW 2011.

Sharon McIvor’s Response to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada's 2009 Proposal to Amend 1995 Indian Act

On April 6, 2009, the B.C. Court of Appeal upheld Judge Ross’s ruling that the Indian Act continues to discriminate against Aboriginal women on the basis of sex with respect to Indian status registration. However, the Court of Appeal narrowed the ruling on the remedy. Because of this, Sharon McIvor sought leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in June 2009.
